Sandemans Walking Tour, Berlin

After a not brilliant night sleep, we awakened weary but excited to explore Berlin.
Last time when Molly and I visited Berlin we discovered the Sandemans New Europe walking tour company. We found the company brilliant, with friendly and informative guides who were animated and possibly more excited than the tourists about sharing the cities which they live in. The tours are in English, but are also offered in Spanish!

We headed for the U-bahn line to the Brandenburg Gate and waited for the tour to begin, quietly surveying the cloudy sky and praying the heavens didn't open. They did.

The holocaust memorial is something you must visit if you go to Berlin. It means something different to everyone, and it's subjectiveness really cannot be explained, it must be experienced.

Some of the remaining Nazi architecture.

In the university square is a memorial for the book burning in 1933. The plaque above is a line from the Heine play 'Almansor', which in English reads "That was only a prelude; where they burn books, they will in the end also burn people".

After finishing the tour we decided to return to the Brandenburg gate, mainly due to the sun finally making an appearance and  the photo opportunities it gave!

After snapping away we headed to the East Side Gallery, but you'll have to read my next blog post to find out all about that!
